Moroccan Meatballs with Spicy Tomato Sauce

Ingredients for 6 servings

For the meatballs:
1 pound ground lamb
1 pound ground beef
¼ cup onion, very finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh mint, finely chopped
2 teaspoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
2 teaspoons cumin
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg white
2 teaspoons plain breadcrumbs

For the sauce:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 medium onion (about 1 cup), finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated
1 ½ teaspoons cumin
1 ½ teaspoons paprika
¼ teaspoon pinch red pepper flakes (more if you like it spicy)
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon tomato paste
16 ounces tomato sauce
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 bay leaf
